Least we forget

Do you remember....
the smell

the sour acrid smoke
the unwashed bodies drenched with the stench of fear
the air full of dirt and danger
the atmosphere penetrated with the dead and dying

Do you remember...
the smell

the sweet fragrance of flowers
the freshness of clean clothes
the warm succulence of a Sunday roast
the scent of a loved one

Do you remember
the sounds

the dying cry of a young soldier as he falls alone to the ground
the cries of despair from men too anguished to care
the moans of pain falling into the tortured bitter air
the harsh rat a tat of desperate gun fire

Do you remember..
the sounds

the call of the lone seagull soaring over a bright blue sea
the soft lullaby of sweet music
the gentle breathing of your child as he slumbers on your lap
the peacefulness of silence

Do you remember..
the sights

the pain filled dirt etched blackness of death
the thick greyness of fading hope and dying light
the solitary soldier as he writhes in agony
the emptiness of souls

Do you remember...
the sights

the brightness of a sunny morning , hope filled and happy as it rises into view
the purity of soft creamy light as it dances on the water
the beauty of autumn leaves , golden colours , crisp and clean
the face of your mother

Do you remember...
the feelings
the mud
the filth
the dirt
the hopelessness
the pain
the fear
the bravery
the strength
the hero's
the end......

..........Least We Forget

Beautiful, intelligent work, this has the pure clean colour of the poppies against the mud and dust of land and sky.

Very touching words and image, the fields of battle are an incredable place to visit and very very humblng. The commonwelth trenches near Albert are where so many young men were ordered to their deaths by bumbling stiff upper lip twits, is quite a stressful painful place to go.
Your poem is so apt, ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die.
I agree Least We Forget, 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month.
Well presented.
