Powder Pink

By chase
Another from my session with things from my little collection.

The lovely Powder Compact belonged to my Great Aunt Lily,my Nana's Sister.Sadly I never met her but she never used the compact which is made for loose powder with it's own little powder puff & was given to her many years ago as a Christmas's musical too which is a bonus.
Yep...another bottle Wink added to the frame to give it some height...sorry Dave Sad

Lit from the RHS of the frame by an old X-Ray viewing box, diffused with a big piece of white paper.
7 frame HDR,each 1 stop apart,combined & tonemapped in Photomatix.
Textures added on adjustment layers in Photoshop.

F11 manual mode
ISO 200
F/L 50mm
Raw files converted in C1.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

The post-processing work is quite beautiful Jan, excellent in fact. That said, this is the "weakest" one of the three for me as I'm not so sure that the powder compact sits too well in the scene. Or maybe it's the reflection that over-complicates the image? I can't quite put my finger on it but something about the items and their arrangement does'nt quite gel as they did so damned well on the previous two.

Still, I love the background, I love the bottle and I love that old lace.

Thanks all.

Dave,I partly agree with you & I have marked you to go greeeeeeen,a composition that I struggled with TBH...I sooooo wanted to 'do' the compact,it is so very beautiful & very dear to me.I really couldn't think of what to include or indeed exclude from this one.
By 'weakest' do you mean compositionally or subject matter ?...maybe it's the pink flower that's slightly out of context ?
Come on,tell would you have included the compact in the image...with what other stuff...a bit of lippy perhaps ?...I'm looking for inspiration with this one,I so need to include this powder compact in my pf.

Anyone else got any ideas ? I have time tomorrow to re-shoot this subject.

To me, this is the best of the images in this series, Janet, love the reflection of the powder puff in the lid of the compact, and the green bottle is perfect. Carol

Personally I like it, if you are not happy with it try a different composition, backdrops etc, as you have the processing spot on, good work

Thanks guys,I suppose we all see things differently,a good job really I guess.I will have another go with this compact though,I just need to get my head round what should be in or out of the frame.
Dave...I did have a go with other stuff accompanying the compact & different bg's too but............Sad didn't quite hit the mark for me...this one was a struggle.

Many thanks for your UA Robert, that means lots to me Smile

I like green bottles Janet Smile
Re ideas - Perhaps ditch the flower - turn the compact a little so it's not head on - use something to keep it just partly open but still showing a bit of reflection - portrait mode.

Firstly I am not capable of producing such an image but to my eye there seems to be some conflict with the softness of the rose and the sharp detail of the lid/mirror/reflection of the compact, perhaps the rose should go and the lid/reflection softened a little, at first look my eye was immediately drawn to the reflection rather than the overall image, having said all that I have great admiration for your work.

Great looking series, I don't really like the reflection puff(?) a string of pearls may sit better, I dunno, the case kind of looks like an oyster or a clam. The world is your oyster but you're futures a clam...

Thankyou David, your comments/ideas are really appreciated. The reflection was important to me in this image though, the flower ( a Lisianthus) wasn't quite so important so....maybe it does need to go,I included it in the first instance to provide a little femininity to 'help' the compact sit better...hmmmmmm ..maybe the compact is as feminine as it needs to be.

Ah...Pearls Scara, you may have just hit the nail on the proverbial head with that idea. The compact is indeed shaped like an where did I put mi Mother's best Pearls...tsk...I will just have to go & borrow some from somewhere Wink

Many many thanks for the ideas guys,I knew there would be inspiration from somewhere to be had Smile

I think this is so beautiful. If I was to say anything after reading the other comments it might be the colour of the rose. The colours in this are so beautifully earthy and old fashioned and then there's pink. Would be interesting to see this minus the flower. Actually could it be that yellow shade in the mirror? ............Sandy

Thanks Sandy, another vote for ditching the Lisianthus.
An idea with Pearls is begining to take shape I think.

Janet, take no notice of that DaveU bloke. He's just jealous that the powder compact is better than his! Smile
On a serious note, call me Mr Thicky, but, beautifully photographed & processed as it is, I can't see what holds the shot together, ie a link between a green bottle, a powder compact, a pink rose & an old watch. Or am I looking too deeply into it? Still nice to look at though.

Hi Rog,perhaps the connection is a little too personal to recognise. The watch belonged to my Nana, the compact to her Sister,my Great Aunt Lily, the bottle is just old & has no connection with the other things but adds a bit of height to the otherwise flat composition...the Lisianthus is there to add a little bit of a feminine touch....I thought.
Anyways..Dave's compact isn't Wink
