Branching Out

By Philo
Second offering from our hols in Turkey. This time Megan perched on the branch of a tree at the edge of the beach as the sun goes down.
Many thanks again for the critique on the last shot.

Personally I can't really fault this rather charming and somewhat well captured photograph. Good use of the natural light.

She looks comfortable and relaxed (though a little round-shouldered...). Exposure looks good - whites held perfectly, composition good, focus spot-on.
Aperture could be slightly smaller so the tree branch is all in focus, but that's minor, and the background is well out of focus, as it should be.

Great family shot, and one that's a keeper

Thats so much better. The branch is the prop and sne looks relaxed and happy. This doesn't try and make a pretty young girl into a glamour model. Unfortunately, they do that for themselves later!

Nice shot much better than the last two and I took out some of the red Highlights with CtrlB nearly sharpened the freckles but that's just me, left them for her to decide on that one...

Thanks for sharing Chen.

Hi Phi, Super family photo, Great evening light, but not much of it on her face.
I think you have chosen to blur the background at max ISO and f2.5, but maybe you could perhaps have stepped down more to get more of her hand and the upright branch in focus. That same upright branch has a distracting highlight on it. Maybe she could have leant her back against the branch to hide it and move her face round into the sunlight?
I'd also consider adjusting her nail polish to a skin tone as i think she'd be better with none.
Its still a nice shot none-the-less.
Kind Regards, Stuart.

Thanks everyone, I hoped this one would be better received as I really like it. To be honest I didn't think too much about getting the branch in focus at the time.
Stuart, I see your point about the highlight on the branch but it doesn't really bother me. You are perhaps right about facing the light but I fear that would just make her squint (I will probably upload an example of this). I like the idea of changing the nail polish, especially as it is a bit worn by this stage.
Thanks for the mod Chen, very subtle.

Youve got her eyes looking at you with catchlights in this one, - makes a difference.

Lovely family record piucture Phil. Like a few before me I would have chosen a slightly smaller aperture, as the background is sufficiently distant to still be rendered out of focus.

Thanks, Frank, the smaller aperture seems to be popular. Think I may start bracketing some shots at different apertures.
