Deer

By Philo
Another one of our local deer population. This was taken mid-afternoon with quite a low sun and caused me a lot of problems with burnt out highlights despite using ev compensation and shooting in RAW. This was one of the very few that came out okay.
Camera settings: f/5.6, 1/800s, 150mm, ISO 400
Comments and mods welcome as usual.

Yes, tricky, Phil. You need enough light to work with yet not so much that it makes life difficult getting the exposure right. You have done well here. A classic pose with good eye contact. I like how you have used the light to get it shining on one side of the face with the other more in shadow. The fur shows up nicely too.

Best wishes

Many thanks everyone. Yes Catherine it was tricky but I can't wait to get back and try again. I want to get a clean shot of a stag but they are not playing the game.

This is a superb, uncluttered natural history record to grace any text book. And that is an accolade.

Big thanks Frank & Paul, I am so glad I decided to have a go at the deer. It is really frustrating but ultimately very rewarding.
