Award Shortlist

1936 Alvis Speed 20 SD

By PhilT2
Thank you Jenn for your award on the last one

This is one of my favorite cars at the museum and no series is complete without it.
I did post it about 18 months ago but in an arty farty heavy HDR and vignetted version. Decided it was justified to re post it in its natural form. An incredible machine without doubt.

The Alvis Speed Models of the 1930's were amongst the most desirable high-performance cars of their decade.
In 1936 this car cost over 700 which was a small fortune in those days when a semi-detached house could be bought for 350. At the time Alvis were in competition with Bentley and Lagonda.
Alvis only made engines and chassis. The cars were bodied by specialist firms including Vanden Plas, Charlsworth and Cross & Ellis.
This car was bodied by Cross & Ellis and is one of only 12 tourers that they bodied.
1,164 Speed 20's were produced between 1932 and 1936 of which 233 are known to still exist.
The car has a 2762cc OHV engine with dual ignition (BTH magneto and coil). It has triple SU carburettors and twin SU electric fuel pumps.
Top speed was 89mph (most family cars of that era had a top speed of 55mph) and fuel consumption of around 15mpg

A fabulous image of this gas guzzling beauty, Phil.
An excellent and most interesting narrative.
Good to see the car outside and not squashed between other vehicles, which makes photography a bit tricky.

Superb image
