Bury FC Protest, and Celebration

By philtaylorphoto
23 August 2019. Bury FC, Gigg Lane, Bury. Fans gathered in the fading light on the Friday in a mixture of anger at the present owner (Dale), despondency that at the stroke of midnight, the club may cease to exist after 125 years. Just before the 10:00 O'Clock News for ITN was being filmed, an announcement was made that the club had been bought by a new owner, and had been saved, resulting in scenes of jubilation from the fans. Sold to Trinity Mirror

An utter waste of a really good storm clouds gathering picture on the gallery yesterday. It just shows that it's worth having something prepared, just in case it all goes pear shaped, ready for first edition.

If only they had announced it 90 minutes earlier I might have got all the nationals. I was the only stills photographer there!

Yes. I know, probably would be better on a full frame, but it's not often you get a tripod out on a fast paced news job.

History in the making, though a sad history at that. Lovely capture.

It was a long night, that started with despondency, and ended in celebration.

Groups of drunken footy fans doesn't really fit on EPZ, so post early hours edit I went with this.

The local paper's desk had cleared off at 6,30, the plan was to go with my stormy skies picture in the morning once the bad news had arrived overnight.

My specialisms are church news, cycling and features, so an evening in a car park of drunken distressed fans was unnerving, and I was on my own.

Shortly before 22.00 the atmosphere changed, ITN were setting up, and with minutes to go, an announcement was made. The crowd went wild.

Candle light protest now illuminated by LCD screens.
Like the immediacy of the slow shutter speed.

Everything else was either flash or 3200 ASA and above. There was a lull in the proceedings, so I got the tripod out.
