Geese In The Bay

By photowanderer
For once, I happened to arrive on the beach at high tide, and lo and behold, there were these greylag geese just where they needed to be. The into the light photography proved a bit much for my point and shoot and me, but I came away with several useable shots.
Other than replacing my S8000 with a D800, I would be grateful for any advice on how to deal with a fairly difficult lighting situation like this, to get the best results. For example; should I have increased the exposure compensation to burn out the background and render the geese better, or do the opposite and silhouette the geese.

I rather like this. The lighting has been well handled with the geese, the subject, being dark. You could try a slight contrast increase, but that might spoil the effect. Would consider a top and bottom crop to a near letterbox format.

No! Part of the charm of this image is the lovely color set.

No! Something has to be against a considerably brighter background for it to be a 'silhouette'. Decreasing the exposure would simply make the geese and the water darker.

I think the exposure was handled well here.
