cicindela campestris

By CarolG
Cicindela campestris, commonly called the green tiger beetle, is a widespread Eurasian species of tiger beetle. Adults are 12-15mm long. The body is green, varying in tone from light to dark, spotted with cream-coloured patches, and in bright sunlight are somewhat irridescent. The eyes are blackish; the legs are brown with whitish hairs. The antennae are long and straight, not clubbed. The adults are sun-loving. They live in places with dry soils (sandy or chalky), appearing from March to October. Like other tiger beetles, they run fast on their long legs and are most often seen on bare ground, in Britain typically on heather moorland. They can fly fast, making a loud buzzing noise. The larvae are carnivorous. They dig burrows from where they ambush ground-living insects such as ants.
V's 2, 3 & 4 were taken indoors, as this chappie wouldn't keep still for me, I managed to get him onto a dry leaf to take him outside for a quick grab shot in V.1.

Hello Carol, you wouldn't have time to eat or sleep out here with all the insect life. Spiders as big as your first! Still trying to upload when I can. The little bird I put up today feeds on the wing as well as settling briefly to get the nectar. Only about 3 inches long. Super detail in your uploads as usual. Sylvia
