Disco Camouflage

By WhiteRose1
Two images of HMS Belfast et al, taken on two different shutter speeds to show the difference in settings.
They were both taken, one after the other, with small apertures and at 27mm on the same lens/camera.

v1 - 20 secs at ISO 100
v2 - 1/2 sec at ISO 1000

Both have needed 'de-noising' especially v2!

Dave

(my wife prefers v2 as it looks more natural!)

Dave. Had you not put the fact you used two different shutter speeds I would have said the difference was white balance. The second having a cooler tungsten feel to it. Just goes to show what latitude we have. You have managed to place three iconic site (not including the Thames) into one razor sharp shot. V1 for me as it reveals a little more detail. Both fantastic shots.

With my impending move to CW I will probably see you up there Smile

Amazing difference. V2 looks more natural all right, but V1 is a seamless night image, delightful to see, Dave. The colours and reflections are marvellous among other things to be mentioned.

Two wonderful night shots. What I like is the light with the subjects close to each other being close to each other
giving overall light. So this makes V1 top of the pops with light detail and natural reflection colour.
Well done Dave. WesternRed.

Isn't it amazing the difference that time can add. V1 is my preference here - unusual for me because V2 is more 'capture the moment', with the ripples and harsher light. But V1 is magical.
Interesting how the balance between the different lights varies according to the shutter speed.
This one is for Bill really, he will return.

I suppose in optical terms, V1 benefits from the phenomenon of persistence of vision.
Put another way, V2 is what we actually see while V1 is what we think we see Smile
And despite my usual grumpy demeanour I'm a bit of a romantic at heart . . . So I'll go for V1.

I hope to visit HMS Belfast when we're next in London: last year the access ramp was being refurbished. I gather that my father was on board as stills photographer for the BAFPU on 6/6/1944. But I won't be there at night!

Although it is not your intention both images for me add a rather fun and frivolous disguise to what the Battle Ship once stood for. This for me makes a mockery of those who have served and fallen at the hands such formidable Naval hardware.

This is an excellent lesson in how colours can vary with exposure times: the lighting on the ship remains similar but the b/g colouring and that on the river is totally different. Now which do I prefer? Not having been there to see the scene, I do not know which is the more accurate (although I note your wife feels V 2 is the more so) but the more accurate would be what I would be trying for. As it is, in my ignorance, I shall have to settle for 1/2 vote to each version, Dave.
No matter, it is as always from you a lesson in composition.......an excellent shot of the river and HMS Belfast........and no matter what one's feelings are about 'decorating' such a ship in lights, it does make for a fab. shot.
Ronnie.

V1 feels more natural for me and shows off the colours and detail to better effect. Important when, as others have pointed out, you've managed to get 3 landmarks in (over-achiever!) without it feeling too busy. The right hand bank is a bit distracting with the bright lights but without it the ship drifts in the water Wink it needs the lead in from the back. This is one of my favourites from your London images. Smile

Dave, once again I have learned something from you. This is the beauty of this site. Thank you for a wonderful demonstration of the effect of different exposure times. I will certainly pay your fee when I get your invoice in the mail. I only hope the rest of us follow suit.

Here is my politically correct assessment of V1 vs. V2:
1) I like V1 for the eye-popping colours (see, I can spell in British)
2) I like V2 because it looks more natural. (you're welcome, wife of Dave)

By the way -- does Her Majesty, Elizabeth II, know about this boat? How dare they muck up our view of the Tower Bridge. :-(
