V2: Original shot in case you want to do mods to it. Would please any of you tell me why the flower looks jagged on the upper side?

I haven't had too much chance of trying the new camera.
I took these flowers' pictures at a nursery on the East Side of Caracas.

I wrote a political commentary and decided to erase it. Photography is one of my means of insulation.

Hi, lovely photograph and beautiful mono shot--

But have you cut the end of the flower off?.

Yes, I thought it would be a better crop, less simple...You are welcome to upload your version of it! Thanks for commenting on the picture.

Marian, the color is nice, but the monochrome becomes a lovely abstraction.

Hello Peter! It certainly looks better in mono, did you see that it looks jagged while in color? Any idea of why?

Very interesting, Marian.
I have no idea what you are trying to achieve but I expect you've done it successfully.
Politics in a Garden Centre?
Is it the Flower Pot Men party?

I am afraid I didn't explain myself properly. I wrote something about this city being an inhospitable, ugly, violent place, thanks to 15 years of socialist revolution, but I refrained from doing that, pretty unsuccessfully, as you can see.

Mono is great....looks kinda phallic to me
Give politics a big miss.....I used to be involved...
But now realise our life on earth is too short and there is so much beauty around us we ignore.
Check out CarolG,s piccy today fat caterpillar changing to beautiful butterfly. Can't get better.

Mono works well, I suspect the jagged detail you refer too is due to the cameras processing of the jpeg, it can sometimes happen particularly with compact style cameras

You can also get a jagged 'stepped' effect along high contrast edges if you've applied too much sharpening.

Like the mono, Marian, focuses on the shape and texture.

The reflective surface and red colour make this a difficult flower to capture,
so you've done well to have only a little bit of flare.
can't decide between mono and colour.
Try focussing on central yellow part (don't know botanical name) in another image.

To answer your question: These are actually 'Jaggies", and heres what they are: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaggies

I have removed them in the mods just by applying a blur along the edges.

I have also uploaded 2 mods with a different approach.

What I like, along with your own narrative, is that the flower is pointing to a way out, - so played a little with that in the mono version.

A difficult plant to capture at all, as its very shiny.

The red is oversaturated in the original.

Its a beautiful country with many, many years of political instability. So it has to be difficult not to become tired of uncertainty.

Thank you so much Willie and Dave for their excellent modifications.

Colors are very intense here, sometimes extremely vivid without adding any boosting.
I had no idea of the difficulty on photographing Callas, there were several dozen of these red ones starting to bloom at the nursery. I think I will return there, without my friend, alone with my camera. Wink

Whilst the original is beautiful, the colours so rich and vibrant I rather admire the wonderful shape and form which seems to be exaggerated by the monochrome processing Marian.
