The crosshead is attached to the piston rod (the round rod on the left) and the connecting rod (fluted rod on the right). The large, castellated nut secures the small end bearing which goes through the end of the connecting rod. Cannot remember exactly when I took it but it was before the end of steam in 1968 so it is genuine steam age oil and grit.
