The Black and White Challenge this week was to come up with something either Art Nouveau or Art Deco. My mind immediately went to a book about Charles Rennie Mackintosh that I had in my Ikea bookcase, however I discovered it was no longer there and I remembered that I had given it away, ah well back to the drawing board.
My second thought was the Odeon cinema in South Woodford an outer London suburb that sprang up with the coming of the railways.
This fine façade faces the High Road and gives it a listed building status. It was opened on November the 5th 1934 by the local MP, one Winston Churchill.
Next door is another listed building, a car showroom.
Quite appropriately it house a Jaguar and Range Rover dealership
Taking a walk along the High Road this area is remarkable for it's plethora of houses from humble cottages through Edwardian, Victorian etc. to Mock Tudor and to modern builds. It struck me the building styles often contain artistic decoration and period influences.
I shall make it one of my Challenges to record, research and catalogue many of these features.
That should keep me on the streets for a few years.
