Went for a walk with the camera today in an Essex countryside village whilst my lovely lady was singing at a birthday party in the village hall. I did not know what the place was like except that there was a pub so all looked fine. My first impression was one of gentrification, for want of a better word, expensive cars, the Old school house now a home behind electric gates. Set in gently rolling farmland most of the housing lay along the main road, A sold sign on one, the next, somewhat neglected and un-modernised, probably belonging to an elderly long term resident. More gated houses opposite the old pub that looked a little undervalued and underused. On up through the village much the same picture, an unused park and children's playground and at the top a trio of public facilities.
A telephone box, a bus shelter and a post box.
The telephone box looked a bit shabby and a look inside explained all,
A closure sign amongst the cobwebs.
It all echoed the changes taking place in British life, we all have mobile phones, we all drive, we email or text etc., our children don't play out unless under strict supervision, we drink behind our gated boundaries and we live our lives through the Social Networks instead of actually socialising face to face.
So who want's to wager, will it be the bus stop or the post box that goes next.
