Trouble is at the time of the photo being taken my wife and I were being eaten alive by midges, so dare not stay too long.

Was there years ago; magical spot. If time permitted I would have indeed shot it later in the evening and opened up teh exposure a bit. Better still, wait for some cloud cover to reduce contrast.
Dusk shots with clear skies are very tough to shoot especially with illuminations. The contrast is invariably just too great for the sensor to handle.
Nice result all the same.
