Found the secret today for these Ray, get the tripod down as low as possible, ground level and shoot low.
Looks a little noisy but guessing a high ISO. These sawbills never stop. Good capture

Two lovely well taken images, very colourful pair these, photographed this species at Slimbridge recently, but poor light got in the way of the enjoyment and the results were very noisy after having to ramp up the iso.

Interesting to see these, Ray and like Johanna my preference is V2. I think it's because you have captured the detail and colour of the 'crest' so well.

Interesting comments here Ray on these 2 good images but I feel the main thing that's missing is a perfectly focused eye in both shots. A sharp eye for me is the main thing that brings the image to life but the focus looks a little soft here, also in V1 it looks like you have a little burn out on the white neck and it may have helped if you had dialled in 1 or 2 stops minus exp compensation as whites are very difficult to get right with default settings on the camera. Having said that you have good composition here and nice reflections in both,

Many thanks Geoff - been having some tutition today with Ron (Maiwand) and Richard (Mossy Oak) so with a bit of practice I might improve a wee bit. Also using a tripod -These were hand held shots
