Interesting, but I would like to see some of the detail more clearly - could you have used a narrower aperture to give you more depth of field?

Hi Kyd, yes I would love to see even more detail but depth of field is no more than a mm or 2 at this extreme close up even when using f16. I have focussed on the eye and when printed A4 at 300 dpi the individual eye segments are clearly visible. Using very small apertures whilst increasing depth of field also reduces overall sharpness due to diffraction. I have often marvelled at the clarity of electron microscope pics where different rules apply. Tracy don't be scared of moths. The large Hawk moths are really furry and are quite happy sitting on a finger being stroked (gently). Thanks guys for your comments. Robert

wow! how very fascinating! lovely details. they even look like they have eyelashes! this is very nice. thanks for sharing. will share this with my daughter who is very in to bugs at the moment. she'll really like this one.

This is a beautiful moth, and even more so in this close-up. The question arises, how would we ever know what these insects look like if it weren't for modern photography? That is what makes them so fascinating. More wonderful work.
