Winchester Cathedral

By redstag
At the centre of our great Cathedrals is the cross. The cross is the plan used to shape the design, and it lives in the heart of the Cathedral, spiritually and physically.
The cross means many things to many people. From sacrifice to hope.
I have found the variety of the Cathedrals I have visited this year a great source of inspiration, yet within all of them there are certain constants. The basic shape of the building, the orientation and hence the way the light travels through the building. Yet some are light and airy, some are dark and sombre.
I enjoyed Winchester, because it encapsulates so many different moods. This view is the traditional, hugely majestic awe inspiring view of the Gothic masterpiece. Yet, at the heart is the modern and vibrant altar cloth, a rare splash of very modern colour, another example of how Winchester has embraced the new. From the Crypt, (with the Gormley statue in one of my previous shots) to the retroquire with the strange little praying skeleton Winchester seems to delight in the ancient and the modern.
If you have made it this far, congratulations, and thank you. But I suggest if you have chance you visit and experience the place for yourself. It is full of contradictions and strange juxtaposition.
Look forward to your comments.
Jon

Great shot with wonderful detail. I like the symmetry and perspective, especially viewed large.

These places are fascinating, and I intend to try and get around to many more of them. I have to be honest and say that with the weather as it is, these interiors provide great inspiration, and dryness!

Thanks for the comments.

Did I mention HDR and tone mapping, I should have but I reckon you all knew that any way! LOL.

Like the comp here with the cross particularly well placed. You could perhaps lose a smidgeon from the bottom but I'm just being picky. Like it.

I agree, there is some amazing architecture to be found Jon - our churches and Cathedrals contain so much history. I like the height in this one and the symmetry, some bright colour from the alter too. Nick maybe right about loosing a little from the bottom but a very pleasing image none the less!

Nick/searah, yes I played with the crop, but settled with this as I felt the extra floor helped to balance the height, it also places the top of the altar on the thirds, stickler for the rules that I am! LOL.
Thanks for all the comments.
