Friends or Foes?

This image is cropped from a broader view of some of the wind turbines on Scout Moor in East Lancashire.(See map) It shows the sheer size of these devices. I understand they are about 80 metres high at the hub level. Local opinion seems divided about their presence.

Quite a striking image. They are huge, but I quite like them, and I'm a great lover of the hills. We've got used to power lines and pylons everywhere so I'm sure over time these will be less criticised. We need to find new ways of making energy, and although they don't generate much power, every little helps!!

There's been at least 2 plans close to me that have been abandoned because of locals rallying against them. Round me it's just flat fields and nothing particularly exciting either, and they all seem to forget we've got 3 coal-fired power stations closeby...

Thanks for your interest Chris.
One local objection is the fact they are sited close to a number of farms and houses and it is claimed that the noise they make at times is akin to having a low flying helicopter overhead. Can't verify this as they've never been spinning when I've been in the vicinity. Like them or not they're visible from many miles away.

Roger.
