It's my sort of subject, I like it a lot. Textures to die for...
Two immediate thoughts. I'd like to get rid of the bit of sky top right, as an alternative approach not necessarily an improvement. Without it the image would have a more abstract feel.
Plus can you add the colour version as a modification? It's a strong b&w, but it occurs to me that some tweaks to the colour channels might give better distinction between rust and wood. Though you may have already used this.

Full of texture, I like the crop which Moira has done...
Quote:I focus stacked several images for edge to edge sharpness. Kept the highlight detail.
I don't think you need focus stack at f8...Texture is often best when you have depth, contrast and pattern...

Lovely textures here, rust and wood, right up my street.
I do like Moira mod which puts those great rusty bolts on a diagonal in the fame.
Focus stacking is a dangerous sport, just one mistake and it's all over....been there, done that. It has worked ok here but at F8 maybe not needed. An alternative ( if you wanted to keep the highlights detail as you mention ) would be an HDR image.
The sky top right is a distraction but I do like the shape of the edges of the wood.
I think that there would be very different viewpoints at this location, iI trust you made the most of it.
Shame there is no colour version to be seen

The bolts and woodgrain make a fine abstract that has good shapes and texture.
As an abstract, the image doesn't have to be realistically orientated, and so I have done a modification where I rotated it and cropped. I sought to remove any trace of the background, as Moira did, thereby concentrating on its strong elements of shape and texture. The eye-catching elements have become the central point of the photograph.
Now your frame is simply filled with the abstracted part of the pier, leaving some mystery for the viewer to ponder upon. The key is to emphasize something about your subject that others may not have noticed.
The subject matter becomes secondary to the observance of the key elements such as form and texture.

A couple or five thoughts...
Always shoot RAW as well as JPG, unless the camera simply won't do it: and if it won't, consider shooting RAW and converting to B/W later. It gives more scope!
The sharpness seemed limited to me - on looking closely, it's because you've uploaded a small file - you get maximum quality if you upload the full size file and let the site resize and sharpen. If you're taking pains to get sharpness, don't throw it away with the pixels.
For my taste, a touch dark, so I've done a mod, and cropped slightly. The sky at the top worried me, so after the crop, I used the spot healing tool to fake in a bit more wood. A highlight at the edge is often a distraction, unless it's the main subject.
I then played with Levels, opening up midtones and darkening the blacks. Distorting the histogram a bit, but I hope it looks good.
