Red Gerbera II

By RobW
Red Gerbera on white. wanted to the flower to be dominant with the stem leading you out of the picture. Possibly could do with a but lighter flower head to make it pop more - any comments happily receieved

I like this sort of image. I am using M42 lenses on 5D II body, some of them are real class glass.

Hi Rob, Gergeras are a favourite for photography. Your intent here to use a very narrow dof is a nice approach. Youve focused cloerd to the front than the back when I look at the centre, and perhaps focusing right in the centre of the centre would have allowed all of the middle to be relatively sharp. A minor issue, and maybe it wouldnt make any difference.

What needs attention though, as you description says Gerbera on white is the background, which is not white. Its a little underexposed to be pure white, and making it actually white adds enough exposure that the flower itself benefits.
I think that the white background likely influenced the metering to be a little under.

I like the stem fading out of the frame too though I would remove that very slight bulge on the left of the stem, about half way down. The petals at the far side blur together in a way that tends to make it look like the flower was cut out and placed on the background, - but thats a function of the lens, not anything you have done.

So, what Ive done to try to get it looking a little punchier is make the background as white as possible; lifted shadows to show more detail in the flower; cropped to an 8 X 10 aspect ration, and in the process tilted the flower the other way, - I intended to tilt it more in the direction its leaning, but did the opposite!.

Hope this helps,

Regards

The depth of field is rather too shallow for me. Needed to be sharp at the front at least. Less important at the back. Assume the lens has a stop down switch allowing use of the aperture ring. Most M42 lenses do - I once has a Spotmatic outfit. If not, f1.8 is rather restrictive.

Given that extra depth, a nice simple image.
