Quote:I have to admire Fuji, for their 'Bridge' cameras, the HS series seems to be developing into a great camera, I had an HS10 for a while and enjoyed using it. The crops show some obvious noise [may be 12mp would have been better], but not that intrusive. Why they never fitted the larger sensor from the XS-1 I don't know, but it would have been a good move. I guess they didn't want to tread on the X series cameras market share.
A good review, and what a zoom lens, good for the twitchers and aviation fans-s1.
I think Fuji's strengths are in the EXR technology and the superb Jpeg colours they produce.

Hello Fuji, I'm waiting for a bridge camera with the HS50 size and design but with a full blown DSLR performance and APS-C CMOS sensor!! The XS-1 was too big and heavy.

The reason why the X-S1 sensor was not used here is because it will reduce the focal length (zoom) equivalent of the lens. Sensor sizes and focal lengths are based on full frame sensor of 35mm. An APS-C sensor in entry-level and mid-level DSLRs has a 1.5X crop (Canon has 1.6X) of the full frame. Thus an 18-55mm lens of the full frame is true 18-55 mm focal length. When this same lens is used on 1.5X APS-C sized sensor, it becomes longer at 27-82.5mm.

If HS50 will use an APS-C sensor, its focal length would be very very short indeed.

Aside from 20.1 mp and OLED evf, I do not see any advantage of the a58 from a57. It even went backward with 5 fps (full res) and 8 fps (tele zoom) as compared to 10 fps and 12 fps respectively in a57. The LCD monitor of the 58 only tilts and not swivel as the 57's. I don't think I will discard my a57 for this one.

It's now been a month and a half since I have this camera. I am not happy at how some people bash this impressive camera. I have tested all the shooting modes and so far it gave me excellent results. The 30X zoom is very useful at wildlife photography especially birds. Moon shots? Oh how wonderful. You can almost feel the texture of the craters if you run your fingers over the picture of the moon. The recent total lunar eclipse gave me an opportunity to shoot 70+ photos of the different stages of the moon.
The use of AA batteries is a good idea. You can have two sets of NiMH batteries. While one set is used, the other set is charged or ready at hand. In my experience, a set of fully charged NiMH batteries, will last about 400 - 500 shots. Moreover, if you are out and have run out of battery power, it is a simple matter to go to a grocery and buy a set of AAs.

Have you actually tried the Sony Cyber-shot TX10 in underwater photography or it was judged merely on "looks". Touch screen is not very useful underwater especially for adults who have big fingers. With hard buttons and controls, one can just feel one's way around. I would vote for Olympus mju TOUGH 8010. It has looks and function.
