I just wanted to say a big "thank you" to everyone for the all your comments. I actually was a little disappointed with the series of images that my visit to the nest produced, I felt that I could have done better. I have been keen on constructing "gadgets" for many, many years and one of the things I had worked on was an infra-red beam set up for just this sort of thing.
I had used it to some extent with my Contax film cameras but never got the best out of it. When I was told of this nest, I spent an hour on last Tuesday morning standing about 20-30 feet away from the gate. (The nest is in a hollow metal gate post). The birds would land in a hawthorne hedge about 30 feet from the nest hole and then fly straight in with the food for the chicks. They would then fly out with the fecal sacs that the young produce for the parents to dispose of.
As the bird left the hedge for the nest, I released the shutter on my 10D and hoped that the 3 frame per second firing rate would get something. I made about 200 exposures and maybe 10 are worth looking at.
I did think of returning with the infra red beam arrangement but I had to adapt it for the Canon Camera and experiment to get the right settings etc. Suffice to say that I could not get the system to work fast enough, i.e. there was a long (in high speed photography terms)delay between the beam being broken and the shutter being released so it's back to the drawing board!
