I once did the same thing in a wildlife center and someone quickly told me that you cannot use flash on animals because their eyes are not like ours and the flash can damage them badly, Specially at close distances. I really didn't know that, but now I never use flash anymore on animals just in case it is true.
Thought you can use the info because I didn't know until someone told me.

Thanks for the comments. Regarding the use of flash, at close distances I always use diffuse flash. In the case of the mice I used a white cloth (a handkerchief)over the flash head(Contax TLA) and it was not quite direct flash (avoiding the reflection in the glass. When it comes to any wildlife shot I always use the golden rule- if it causes damage or distress to the subject, DON'T DO IT. I didn't take many shots and there was quite a turnover of individual mice in the flowerpot so I think I didn't make much impact but the point is well taken and will be part of my considerations for future shots.
