A boat floats
on its mirror image

An old image revisited...

This series of images is inspired by Haiku - the tiny poems of Japan, traditionally written in seventeen syllables.

Haiku usually gain their effect by suggestion, presenting a clear-cut picture which serves as a starting point for trains of thought and emotion. But because these poems are short, they rarely try to give the picture in detail - the rest the reader must fill in.

In recent years, there has been an enthusiastic and expanding interest in Haiku-in-English. This genre springs from the Japanese form but rarely consists of seventeen syllables. What it does seek to retain is the brevity, clarity, immediacy and resonance of Japanese Haiku and, like a photographic image, to record and share a moment of seeing...

01: strangers
02: curl
03: been there
04: dissatisfied
05: the silence of books
06: one farmer and me
07: the last embrace
08: shallows
09: before the guests
10: retreats to the sea
11: a moment of stillness
12: in between

Thank you for viewing - all feedback (+/-) gratefully received...

A good feel to this and I liked your description. For me though the boat is much too big in the frame. IMO more space needed above and to the left so that the boat and reflection are part of the image but not overly dominant.

This is a very lovely image but I agree with Dave's comments that you have treated the boat and reflection equally when perhaps priority given to the boat giving it more space certainly above might have produced something really amazing rather than simply excellent!

Best wishes

The old pond;
A frog jumps in
The sound of the water

RH Blyth's translation of Basho's famous Haiku. I am sure you must know it. (This was the first Haiku I came across).

And one of my all time favourites:

A blind child
guided by his mother,
admires the cherry blossoms

Can you not feel the texture, smell the scent?

I love what you've done here. Combining Haiku with imagery is a great idea, combining two immensely enjoyable creative outlets.

I have added you to my favourites as I hope you will be continuing along your Haiku journey of observation.
