Something to try since you are up for a bit of experimentation.
Meter then go to manual and under expose by several stopps, (try a few to see what works best).
The un-lit background and sky will take on a really moody look while your subject is still lit nicely. You may have to adjust the amount of flash or even try a coloured light or two, (sweety papers are cheeper than proper diffusers and work just as well!
