All or Nothing

By rrf105
I took this shot of my friend Alex at a local outdoor court last night. This was lit with two off camera flashes- One CTO gelled to light Alex and the other to throw a bit of cool side-lighting up at the ring. White balance was set for tungsten (and yes I could have just stuck a blue gel on the second flash and balanced for flash but I was already clinging onto a worryingly bendy basketball ring stand and was in no hurry to shift my weight!!).

Thanks for looking, all comments appreciated,

Great! I think the light on him is a bit harsh. I would not have positioned him im the middle of the circle but more bottom right so you could see more of his shadow. On top of that it would be even greater if you caught him in the jump just after he let go of the ball.

Thanks for your comments everyone. Ellie, I have actually got a pic of him in mid-shot but I haven't processed it yet. I'll upload it tomorrow.
I did consider moving him over to make a bit more of the shadow but decided to keep him in the middle of the frame to to keep the emphasis on the shapes and symmetry. In a perfect world (or one where I had one more flash!) I would have put another light at about 7 O'clock to the camera to get another shadow going off to the top right of the frame to make the shot a bit more symmetrical.

Thanks again everyone,

A really superb shot and well worth all your efforts to capture it. I love the way your friend is eyeing the ring - adds terrific sense of anticipation and tension. Remarkable. Well done.

Thanks everyone. I just monkeyed my way up the support stand and sat behind the backboard. It felt a bit precarious though! I'm just about to upload a similar pic of Alex in mid shot. I would be really grateful if you guys would have a look and let me know which one you prefer as I'm not sure.

Thanks again,
