ive chased after these a few times and with a 300mm you did well to stalk him so close. you caught him with a fair expression and seperated him well from the background.
i know you cant move them around a lot and the only way of changing view is to move around yourself at the expense of scaring them off but the position you had created a few problems.
the grasses over the body and face although oof are distracting and some of them could have been cloned away. the area of bright cream colour is vey overpowering and takes attention from the stag. nothing you could do about that.
i would have preferred to see all the antlers or less of them with a tighter crop.
the background greens are a litle vivid and i would have desaturated the green/yellows in ps and boosted the sat on the reds for his body.
im thinking the catchlight in the eye has suddenly appeared in photoshop but i dont think it was required really, and overall a little more sharpness would have been nice.
i can see you probably used a fairly wide aperature with the oof highlights in the background and wonder if you may have had a slightly better image by stopping down a couple of f stops.
a nice record but few tweaks could make all the difference,
well done for getting so close,
Phil

Hello, Daz. This is a lovely close image with good light, exposure, detail and dof, as well as eye contact and a little catchlight in the eye. The main problem seems to be the out-of-focus grass that is going across the face, and I'm sure there was nothing you could do about it at the time of shooting. I have done a modification where I cloned it all out, as well as the brown area bottom right (not sure if this is part of the body). I did nothing else except add a touch of contrast.
