Personally I would 'cheat' and sharpen up the stag only and blur the rest a little.

Great shot and I love the light and the direct eye contact.
I agree that it would be good if the stag stood out from the crowd a little more; maybe shooting from a lower angle; or how about cropping 25% off bottom and left
