Quiet Afternoon

By salopian
I was attracted to this scene of people quietly tinkering with their boats and tried to catch a bit of the atmosphere

A pleasant scene here canal side and compositionally a well balanced picture. Although that crane jib is aprt of a boatyard I do find it a little intrusive and not quite in keeping with the rest of the upload, but there is not a lot you can do about it unless you wait for it to be lowered. I would get rid of then green border, borders are fine, but here the colour does not help.

Your choice of EXIF I find somewhat odd. The sort of aperture you really want to use for this landscape is f8 or f11 dependent upon distances apart of key elements. Given your shutter speed is 1/1000sec there is plenty of scope to manage this. Why not f11 @1/250sec? In addition, I don't see any need for negative exposure compensation here so set it to zero.

My personal preference for such scenes is for a little more 'punch' to be added and a little more texture to the sky. So acccordingly I have uploaded a mod where I have eliminated the border, added punch and darkened the sky using Topaz adjust filter. I hope you approve.

Decent pictorial record with quite a lot going on. No real problems. The Powershot will probably have a minimum aperture of f8, but with the small sensor the depth of field should be pretty large.

hi, its a pleasant enough scene and apart from the lack of detail in the sky which may have been controlled better i can see why you were drawn to take a picture.

i can see the intersting elements but for me i think they are competing a little and splitting the shot into 2 pictures.

there are the two figures on the right, vertical crop and a nice picture on their own, then there is the activity on the barge off side which again is a picture on its own but together im all over the place looking for a place for my eye to rest. a bit odd really since it has the traditional curved lead in and figures on the third.

i think a better option here may have been to concentrate on a smaller area within the frame and make more of a smaller area. the buildings etc and bald sky dont seem to add anything other than setting the scene.

sorry i cant be more positive, its taken well enough, just dosnt ring the bell.

Thanks for all the helpful comments - when I saw it on the gallery, I thought it looked rather flat and the mod deals with that very well
