End of the Line

Staying in sunny Folkestone for this image.

The Harbour Station connected to the pier, welcoming boat trains from London connecting with ferry services to Calais and Boulogne was last used for regular services in 2001, but continued to be used by the Venice-Simplon Orient Express Co. until 2009.
Today, only the ghosts remain, although anglers can still fish from the pier.

Many thanks for all the comments on Tide's Out...much appreciated.

Apologies to those who commented and voted on this image yesterday, but Jasonwl pointed out a glaring error with the image which I didn't see because of my new glasses acquired the day before! Well, that's my excuse, anyway.Blush

Great composition and tonal range.

The crumbling splendour of yesteryear Malc, amazing how quickly it's gone downhill, so to speak.

I had no idea the station was in use as recently as 2009. I passed through in about 1982 (all our other school exchanges went via Dover) but remember it for the dramatic curve.
Love the composition here, and the mood of the b&w conversion.

Seems sad that this line and it's traffic has been lost as it looks a splendid spot to arrive at after a journey from the capital.
And as Dougie says, it looks to have deteriorated a lot since last use.
Guess your B and W presentation fits in well with the above scenario, esp. as there is also considerable contrast across the frame, Malc.

Shame to see these places fall into disrepair, but a well seen and captured shot here, Malc - just has to be in mono... Wink

Got a reliable internet connection at last so I will repeat my comment from my earlier unsuccessful attempt -

A sad story of abandonment and dereliction perfectly portrayed in colourless mono.

Funny to see an office chair sitting alone and neglected under the Pier. Looks a good place for a photographer. Is sad to see it in such disrepair though. Great shot.

I wondered when that would be mentioned. I also was struck by its presence there.

I see the floor has been patched once or twice...just like our roads up here. An interesting structure and a super conversion.

A powerful mood of emptiness and desolation.
