Brass should to be polished before it can be blown. This rule only applies to bands and orchestras. Cool dudes blowing a mean sax in a smoky jazz/blues club are excluded from this rule. Polishing doesn't improve the sound, but at least you look the part with your shiny instrument in your hand.
It also helps if you pick up your instrument before you inadvertently step on it.
Sometimes blowing can take more effort than polishing...
