Take that!

By saltireblue
Outside the Centre Pompidou in Paris, a couple of Gaulois-smoking workmen were in the process of cementing a new sculpture in place.
They informed us that it represents the French football player Zinedine Zidane (very French-sounding) headbutting the Italian Marco Materazzi during the World Cup final in 2006.
The sculpture is approx. 5 m high, and is made by an Algerian sculptor, Adel Abdessemed.

I think that ZZ on the left is short-sighted and is merely trying to read what is embroided on Marco's commerative final shirt...what do I know?

Many thanks for all recent comments - they are appreciated.

You must be one of the first to Photograph the Statue Malc, and a very good job you've made of it too.
And if I remember rightly, He was sent off during His last ever game.

Ah yes, I remember it (the head-butt) well...
Superb image, and I can imagine that this will arouse very mixed feelings in France. ZZ and the French 2006 World Cup team did so much to counter racism in French sport.

So unkind of the football ref sending him off for being shortsighted.

Superbly captured image.

What next, a statue of Cantona kung fu-ing the spectator, or Di Canio pushing the ref over. A very controvertial choice I guess but very well captured with the diagonal through the heads.

Very good shot. Strange this unsportsmanlike-like behaviour would be the subject of a sculpture, and on display in Paris. Maybe its Frenach thing...

Photographing sculpture is something of an obsession for me. Conveying three dimensions in two, conveying someone else's creative in one's own style... This is special and I really wish I had taken it.

Isn't he simply trying to avoid looking at his opponent's discoloured teeth?
Excellent choice of pov and fine b&w.

I think you have a fine image here, but I am astonished to think that something like this would be worthy of such a wonderful work of artTongue!

An excellent capture and fine work, but the sculptor is surely glorifying this thuggish behaviour.

Yes,he was a bit of a hot head Malc, but a great player too.
Just a pity he never had a Scottish granny and he could have played for Scotland !!
Good shot.

Glad you explained it, Malc i wondered what the heck was going on,and football wasnt part of it,dramatic crop and well chosen b&w . Yes my shot was just up the road from the Rothsay pavilion, and still the same company running the ferries,we loved the place and will be going back ,with the car ,to explore it better, didnt realise the history of the place.Stay well you and Mrs Salty.
