Travelling by train

By bliba
Rail journeys have had a special appeal for me ever since I was a child. For me, they are the epitome of travel.

Where does this love of the railway actually come from?

It could be a familiarity gained in childhood that sits deep inside me. When I was a little boy, travelling by train meant always being allowed to go to the sea (we went to Romania almost every year to visit my grandparents on the Black Sea), snacking on biscuits and other sweets ,where my parents hardly ever argued and somehow seemed happy, and always ending up somewhere nice in the end.

And today? Today I travel without biscuits and other sweets, but in most cases I still end up somewhere nice. But the best thing about it is: having time for myself. Somehow strange. On the train I feel free and only do things I love. Like reading, listening to great music, discovering landscapes, watching people, relaxing. Often I do something I have neglected for a long time. I leave all obligations at the door and pick them up again sometime later.
On the train ride, you're easily rocked, as they do with babies. And then there's the monotonous rattling. ...... a pleasant tiredness sets in.

But that's not the only reason why I love train travel. Travelling by train is also an adventure for me! Especially in foreign countries.

This picture was taken on the way to the south in the basque country - border France/ Spain. it was a very hot day and because of the heat the train had to stop often because the tracks were too hot and had to be controlled.

have a good weekend

Wonderfully expressive and atmospheric reportage, both words and photograph. I too love rail travel though within GB it is rarely pleasurable, though local lines are better than long-distance routes.

Have a good weekend!

I like the photo and your words to go with it.

If you ever travel by train in Malaysia wrap up warm, but in Indonesia dress like you are going to the Arctic Circle. The aircon is fiendishly cold. ❄️❄️❄️

Not elegant, but very real... And your text is a poem to train travel.

Much of my rail travel has been for work, and all of that on British trains: often late, cramped, and far too busy. Not to mention long delays when changing trains, sitting on stations that are not lovely places...

But there have been other times, when I have had a sense of real freedom on the train, letting others do the hard work of moving me around. I understand - just - the romance!

I can still remember going by steam trains, when you could stick your head out the window and see what was going on, and lulled into sleep with clickety-clack of the noise of crossing the joints between rails. It was very easy when you had the windows down to get soot in your eyes, and not forgetting the smell of the smoke. Today very sanitized! Like your image, and your preamble, Ollie!!

I think John Hiatt wrote the lyric “ I could sleep forever on a train”. Maybe because all that rocking takes us back to being in the Womb. This is a wonderful candid that says it all ….Oliver . Think you would like John Hiat ….try the album called Slow Learning

An award as much for the narrative as for the image, Ollie. Perfectly described.

I think it's nostalgia, when I was a lad to go on a train was special, it took you off somewhere nice, usually to the seaside. Not the same these days, especially with the current rail strikes, and it's all about speed, not enjoying the actual journey. The last I went on was whilst on holiday to Baveno on the shores of Lago Maggiore, when we took the local train up to the city of Domodossola, and changed to the Maggiore Express to take us into Locarno at the northern tip of Maggiore. It was so delightful, going at a leisurely pace so we could take in the wonderful scenery. Loving your candid here, Ollie, she's well away! 😃👍🏻

Great shot that really captures the mood of a long hot train journey.
I could never get a shot like that, I'm always the one that's asleep.

My happies holiday memories from childhood are of those when we travelled by steam train. The hope it was a corridor train and we could have a compartment to ourselves! The flasks and egg and cress sandwiches!

Wonderful narrative and image Oliver.
