The Marina - British Leyland's (successful) attempt to prove that they could design crude cars as well as technologically advanced ones...

Why they might have thought it necessary to produce something like this when they could produce 1100s, Maxis and Allegros, I'm not really sure. Having driven all of them in the Seventies, this was my least favourite. (And yes, I rate the others as being well ahead of hte game, and very much 'fit for purpose': a Marina was a car of which you could say 'at least it doesn't rust as fast as a Datsun'...)

This is one of the very few Austin/Morris cars I didn't own over the years. So I was rather a dab hand at rust, and lots of it.

I once went to deal with some rust around the wheel arch of a Montego with a wire brush. A few brush strokes and the whole wheel arch was on the floor. I have to admit I was rather proud of the rebuild job on that, using anything I had garage at the time. Happy days...

Great to know its history - the old cars were more fun than today's sleeker designs.

Fun story, Kenny. Had a tinny Marina for a company smoker once - that was enough, lol. Remember the Princess; now that at least looked advanced for its time, and even felt quite comfortable on the inside.
How about the Metro with a clutch pedal so stiff that it built your left leg muscles up so much you walked with a limp, especially if you had to drive the M8 through Glasgow at peak times - twice a day?
