Burning the heather

By AnnChown
Self explanatory really, except that these estate workers were burning a swathe of land to act as a fire break so that when they burned the whole hillside it wouldn't spread. Things didn't turn out that way and the fire brigade had to be called out to put the fire out. The north west of Scotland hasn't had the rain we've had in the rest of the country and the result is that the ground is tinder dry.
Thanks for looking and for any comments and/or criticisms.
Ann

Ann, this is superb! The way you have used the light to silhouette burnt stems against the smoke, the way you have composed and timed it to catch that arrow-head of handles, and the contrasting body language.
Story-telling at its best.

I know they have top burn the heather to encourage new growth, but it's a rather risky way of doing it, especially if there is a wind! Carol

A great image and really does show what was happening with good mood......Sandy
Well done finding the guys working in the fire breaks. The smoke covered major parts of the west coast and the Cuillin all but vanished in the smoke, I had to go off the island one day to get away from it. It must have spoiled many holidays, as it happened during the Easter break.
Great work shooting against the light Ann.

Really good image and you're right about the dry conditions. There have been literally hundreds of wildfires in the Highlands and islands in recent weeks. Actually had some rain at the weekend that put out one of the fires and the fire service is hoping it will continue.
