I recently bought a used Sigma 600mm mirror lens, specifically to try my hand at bird photography. The learning curve has been shallow - I've been learning a lot about my EOS 40D and the difficulty of manual focusing when your eyes aren't 20:20 and the dof is but a few centimeters. At one stage only 1 in 5 were acceptably in focus but I now get 1 in 2 using magnified live view, pre-focusing and a wireless trigger. Despite the odd background blurring, I'm pleased with the successes.
This sort of detail I could never get with my 55-250mm IS
