Shoes On The Danube.

By Sezz
Shoes on the Danube - The Shoes on the Danube Bank is a memorial in Budapest, Hungary. Conceived by film director Can Togay, he created it on the west bank of the Danube River with sculptor Gyula Pauer to honor the Jews who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during World War II. They were ordered to take off their shoes, and were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away. It represents their shoes left behind on the bank.

A very moving tribute! People leave flowers, light candles and tie ribbons to remember their families. Made me feel sad and I felt it appropriate to capture this one where the flowers had faded!

Thank you for your time, as always your thoughts/comments are very welcome.

Regards - Sarah J x

Sarah, I didn't know about this when we were there some years ago - I wonder if it was there then? This is so personal, so human and understandable.

Many thanks for your time and kind comments, always appreciated!
Moira and Mike, thanks so much for your UA's, a lovely surprise Smile

Moira, I believe the memorial was erected on the Bank in April 2005. There are women's, men's & children's shoes there, showing none were spared Sad
