Adam. Good idea but it's screaming out for some fill in flash on Gillie's face to lighten it up a little.

Its is a tad too dark where you need it to be bright, and this is due to the presence of the sky in the shot.

Including the skyline, and Big Ben was a good idea, but when you do this, you need to force your flash to be on so you brighten the closer subject.

Ive loaded a mod where Ive simply emulated the effect of flash on the face which gives you the idea how it would look.

Ive brightened some eye shadows and added a couple of small catch lights too.

Hope this is helpful,

I think the figure needs lightening and the Big Ben tower needs straightening, both of which the mod shows. Some colour can be introduced with the saturation tool/panel. Selective sharpening helps bring out the pertinent details.

Firstly congrats to your girlfriend on her graduation Smile

Fill light could have made a big difference, I always use flash as a last resort and tend to use natural available reflective surfaces ie white walls, glass or water to bounce a little fill light if available.

Something else worth knowing is that renting out the mortar board and gown is pretty expensive for just a few hours use. Paying out just a few extra quid gives you a whole week to play around.

The idea and composition is excellent, but you needed that flash fill. Always try both, a few with flash, a few without. You would not get the exposure correct as exposing for her face would over expose the background, and for most people, flash fill is the obvious answer.

Try letting the camera sort it out, they often do it well. Yours, I think, is a bridge camera by Fuji - I had one years ago and it managed fill flash well. The danger is that it might over expose the figure.

Point the central focusing square at your girlfriend, half press the shutter button to set focus AND FLASH - keeping the shutter button half pressed so as not to loose the settings - re-compose and shoot.
