I really like these, especially the first one.

However, it really needs more detail in it. And while I love that the journal is similar in colour to the water behind it, that makes it hard to see detail. My mod addresses this.

The lack of real sharpness across the journal is annoying, and I'd say you should have stopped down to f/8 or f/11. The IS would probalby handle one-handed camera operation at 1/100 and 28mm, though you could raise the ISO further with little problem.

If you're allowed to edit thoroughly, use the first one, but download Nik (it's free from Google) and use it first! Otherwise, though the composition fo the second one is weaker, I think, the contrast makes it better without further work.

I'm guessing Moira may suggest monochrome...

I like the idea. It combines the idea of The Book as the sum of our knowledge, experience, and the idea of photography as a visual diary.

What I'd really like to see is the journal held open, at a page of notes. That would make it so much more personal.

No, strangely enough I wasn't thinking b&w (though it's an idea... ) But I was thinking square... The lead-in of the arm from the corner is excellent, and all those diagonals would fit so neatly into a square where the journal would be the centre of attention, the focal point rather than a stopping-off point in a journey through to the right side of the frame.

I do also want to lighten the background a bit, to distinguish the journal from it better.

I'm off to see what I can do.

OK, two modifications uploaded. I cropped, lightened a bit overall, then selected the background and lightened a bit further. (If you try this, remember to include the bits of background seen through looks in the cord!) Then a bit of unsharp mask.

I worked the b&w in Nik Silver Efex Pro, as mentioned by John above. Strong contrast, a bit of Burn edges, some work in the colour channels to darken flesh tones, and a hint of sepia.

See what you think. I think the different mods indicate that this is a great idea with the scope to carry it forward.

The idea is good, the quality leaves something to be desired. I assume you are holding the camera one handed and it has not focused on the journal. The journal is the subject and simply must be sharp.

You need a tripod, pre-focus on manual, then move the book and release the shutter with the book in sharp focus. Sharpness is a critical requirement her and also a basic photographic requirement.

yo have good ideas but you must get the technical side right.
