Eriosomatinae! Who'd Have Thought it?

By SocksAndStuff
Very quick ID snap of a strange little insect. Thought I'd share this as it had me totally puzzled. It flew around soundlessly and floatily, looking just like a tiny random fluff ball, but every now and then it seemed to move illogically so I followed it about until I got this shot. Turns out it's a Woolly Aphid 'Eriosomatinae' an insect that sucks the fluids out of plants. This is its winged adult form which flies around looking for a place to lay its masses of eggs. Cool eh? Smile

Well spotted and caught - I may have cropped a little closer, just to see the gorgeous details on the bug a bit clearer! Smile

Well I never, how smart is this little one to disguise itself as fluff.
I wonder how many have been picked up and used as nesting material?
