Hornet 'Vespa crabro'

By SocksAndStuff
Hornet 'Vespa crabro' visiting our Staffordshire garden for water, and on this occasion a little sustenance from the flowers too.

Britain's largest social wasp measuring up to 35mm long, the Hornet's size alone ensures it cannot be mistaken for any other wasp. Like the Common Wasp it is striped, however instead of being black and yellow, it has chestnut-brown and yellow-orange stripes.

Lovely shot Helen. Went around Europe on a Vespa in 1960, not one of these though.

Makes me thankful we've only got a 'regular' wasps nest, Helen!

A little complex but a fascinating background on this large wasp. TG
