Last night was probably the most tragic night in Porvoo's history for a long time, as the big old cathedral burned down. =(
It all started at about 2 AM when I sat in front of my computer, and suddenly heard all kind of sirens at the same time; firetrucks, police cars and ambulances. I knew something was wrong, so I took a look out of my window. The sight was quite devastating; 5-10 metres high flames on top of the church. Even though it was a sad moment I just had to bring my camera to the window and start taking some shots. After filling the 1GB memory card once and emptying it to the hard drive, my friend called and wondered if I would like to go take some closer shots from the river. He came and pick me up and then we drove off. The sight from there was even more tragic, and I just knew there was nothing stopping the flames, as the roof had collapsed already. Luckily the brave firemen saved the church's interior almost entirely as the fire on the roof was tamed so quickly.
Today the police started investigating the fire, and it turned out that it had been started by someone from the outside. =( I mean what goes through a person's mind when he/she decides to burn a 800-year old church? It's sick! Hopefully the police catches that person soon.
The repair cost of the church is estimated to be around 10 million euros, and the repairs will be ready in 2009.
This shot is dedicated to all the hardworking and brave firemen that saved the church from being more destroyed. You are our heroes!
I sent the best shots to different newspapers this morning, so tomorrow we'll see if any of them got published.
