now wings folded

By PaulLiley
Small Tortoiseshell with its wings folded. I was struck by the difference in colour. Folded like this makes them a far less attraction to predators - isn't nature wonderful as to how creatures have evolved in the art of self-protection and survival. I know you see these everyday but its the thought and understanding of evolution behind them that is so amazing. Darwin's evolutionary process at work-living proof. Thanks to everyone for comments and votes on yesterdays image. Very much appreciated.

I see you've used Program AE mode and I'm taking notes of the settings your camera has chosen.
Stunning detail - I expected the focal length to be even less with the markings so clear.

A lot of butterflies have outstandingly beautiful underwings. I love to see them. Lovely close and detailed shot, Paul.
I have pondered on what you have to say for many years. Nature is certainly wonderful, especially when it comes to camouflage and warnings. Someone once tried to answer my questions, and said that those who don't adapt just don't survive, but I'm still not sure that's the whole story.

An exceedingly fine close up, you've captured its wing patterns and markings in such intricate detail
