Aero Engines, Science Museum, London

By spikemoz
These pictures were taken at the London Science Museum, where they have an amazing collection of aero engines.

V1 & V2
This engine is the famous Rolls Royce R Type which was supplied to Supermarine for the Schneider Trophy winning S6B sea plane designed by RJ Mitchell. It also powered a number of land speed record cars. These engines were easily recognised because of the taper on the front of the camboxes as this part of the engine protruded above the fuselage and had to be shaped to blend in with the streamlined shape of the aeroplane. They eventually developed over 2300bhp and the S6B would become the first aeroplane to exceed 400mph. There is another one of these engines in the RAF Museum at Hendon. The Schneider Trophy and one of the winning seaplanes is just accross the floor from this engine.

This is another unusual pre- war engine. It's an inline 8 cylinder Beardmore diesel engine built for the ill fated R100 & R101 airship project.

When a picture looks like a Cuneo, I automatically start peering into every detail of it looking for a mouse. I expect one of these days, Andy'll put one in and keep us up all night trying to find it! Wink

Don't forget Den, our generation had the Eagle comic with the Ashwell Wood cut away drawings as well as the same thing in the Aeroplane. Also, our heros were real and not the creation of PR people and the media. Mind you I still read the label hanging on the engines, that was a great help! Wink
