Tiny at Barrow Hill Roundhouse.

By spikemoz
This sequence of pictures are of the Great Central Railway class 8K 2-8-0 locomotive (LNER & BR O4 class) 63601 at last weekend's steam gala at Barrow Hill Round House near Chesterfield in Derbyshire.

V1, V2, & V3
She has just emerged from the shed and the footplate crew are preparing her for the days activities. V2 is a good representation of what a place like this looked like during the steam era on British Railways. Particularly the fireman trimming the coal on the tender, only a crew of two, no hi-viz vests and another locomotive lurking behind the row of vans. The only thing that gives the game away is the apple green tender on the left, as this livery was long before the 'ferret and dartboard' British Railways crest was introduced. So, I've also converted it to B&W, which I think makes it bit more convincing.

V4, V5 & V6
The GCR 8K (04) made a number of movements about the shed yard during the day and very nice it looked too. For some mysterious reason these locmotives were nicknamed Tinys.

V7 & V8
With V7 I've tried to reproduce the smoke haze that used to hang in the air when a number of locomotives were raising steam. I've used a large amount of zoom to forshorten the distance, tweaked the colours and light levels a bit and I've also coverted it to B&W in V8. Not altogether sure it's worked too well, but I'll try again with future pictures taken at a place like this.

Spike.

Excellent! V3 & V8 sure capture the essence of steam days. Is it ever possible to recreate those summer Sunday evenings with 20 or so locos in the yard with the blower just cracked and pungent dark grey smoke just rolling out the top of the chimney and being spread around by the slight breeze. I don't think so but you've had a pretty good attempt here Spike. You'll have the HSE banging on your door.
