Barton Swing Aqueduct

By Spirit
When a ship needs to pass up the Manchester Ship Canal at Barton (Near Eccles), this suspended section of the Bridgewater canal is rotated 90 degrees.

The beauty for me lies in the fact that despite being an engineering world first (Opened 1894), and local landmark, it has no heirs and graces looking semi derelict. It is in fact used regularly. This picture was taken from a road bridge which also rotates on the same central plinth. Click on the link for more info.

An excellent photograph of a fascinating structure. I must visit it myself, some day.
