Welcome to the Critique Gallery, I remember noticing your first upload in the main Gallery - you have an eye for the b&w potential in images.
I've spent a while looking at this, it almost works for me, but not quite, and I suspect that part of the problem is the scale that I'm viewing it. This would work much better blown up a metre wide and hanging on a wall than it does on a computer screen. Then I would be able to get lost in the details better.
I love reflection images where reality and illusion merge, where it's not clear where the real object stops and the reflection begins. That's certainly the case here, but there's so much detail that it's only really the spots of surface tension that indicate that there are reflections involved. I would prefer a much simpler composition.
Compositionally I like those two diagonals on the left, but I'm not actually sure what they are. Sometimes that matters, sometimes it doesn't.
It's a good b&w, hard and bright.
You've cropped for breadth, I might be tempted to crop for simplicity, as an alternative view not necessarily an improvement. Mods don't seem to be enabled, so I cannot try that out at the moment.

Hi,
Thanks for the comments, very much appreciated.
I think as it is a photo of just the reflection it can be difficult to see what is a reflection and what is not, especially towards the top of the image which hopefully makes it more interesting. It is actually a reflection of a small wooden bridge over a stream.
Is there a way to enable modifications (I thought that when I uploaded the image it stated that mods could be made) on this as it has already been uploaded to the Gallery ?
Thanks,
Emma.

Cheers, I've uploaded a Mod. It's a square crop, which often works with abstracts. Square contains lines, creates a taut feel. I've made use of the diagonal shadows, in a different way to your crop. I made a Levels adjustment to introduce a more luminous feel on the water, otherwise no changes. This takes me into the detail of the surface tension more intimately, but that's just how I see things. As I said, it's an alternative way of seeing, not necessarily an improvement.

Hi,
Thanks for that, I really like it.
It definitely pulls it in and gives a different perspective and I think if it was cropped from the other side it would change it again.
I think your right as well with the scale, the original would look good blown up and I could also see the square cropped one you did maybe in a 10 x 10 with a large mount board which I think would really pull it in.
Thanks very much for your input and time on this.
