Terrific shot - the smoke adds real atmosphere (no pun intended!). Well done.

I hope you passed! :0)

I like very much how it has captured someone at work. The hand the shoe are all I need to see exactly what is going on.
3 Sep 2004 5:05PM
The photo (for the equine impaired members of ePHOTOzine!) is of a farrier's hands holding the horse's foot as he sears the hoof to the shape of the shoe (which is extremely hot after being heated in a furnace).
3 Sep 2004 6:28PM
thanks lauren. i know what it is, my question is why this is considered an excellent photo. i spend a lot of time analyzing shots as i am constantly trying to improve myself. i learn a lot that way, we all do. when someone's work is justified as 'good' in the general consensus, i just want to know why if it is not obvious to me by looking at it.

no flaming arrows please, but i personally would not consider this a good photo and that's where i am coming from. interested in knowing why 15 people think it's good. what is it about this that pushes your buttons- please be descriptive about what makes it good or why it should be here in your eyes.

i know likes and dislikes are personal preferences and i am not the ultimate authority on what's good or not good. i am also overly honest and appreciate the same. if i'm this far off in my perception, then i just obviously need to learn a lot more than i thought i did.

lauren, this has nothing to do with you personally. i totally look forward to seeing more of your work and i extend a huge welcome to you! i apologize for the controversy right out of the gate and please don't take it personally.
3 Sep 2004 6:33PM
Fair enough - you said you couldn't make out what it is {shrugs}. Can't please everyone. Criticism is always good so long as it's constructive. What don't you like about it?
3 Sep 2004 7:13PM
lauren, it's not what i don't like about it, rather it's being able to justify to myself what i do like about it enough to say 'yes, this is an excellent shot' i'll stop now- don't get hung up on my opinion, there are 16 others who disagree with me so the odds are definitely in your favor. have a good weekend and keep uploading!
3 Sep 2004 7:15PM
oh no - i'm not hung up, i'm interested in what everyone thinks of my work, even the minorities! lol!
3 Sep 2004 7:18PM

Im pretty much with mwatkins9801 on this one. Theres not a lot to dislike about it, but Im struggling to see why it warrants an EC. I realise its still quite frowned upon to speak ones mind and disagree with the majority, but for me, this is run of the mill stuff. But you picked Petes weak spot, black and white! Wink

3 Sep 2004 10:21PM
You are the judge of what you think makes a good photo. In this example I don't think its a question of whether or not its a good photo - it is simply a photo the Editor likes! Congrats Lauren.
3 Sep 2004 10:46PM
Err..sorry, but when I first saw it I thought it was a poor picture. I don't like the framing - there's not enough in it to get me going. Can't see why this gets and EC. Come on Mr Editor, perhaps you should give some feedback.
Cheers, Ian.
3 Sep 2004 11:09PM
yes steve, that's a given. i don't question pete's preferences- he may have had a pony as a boy and this touched some sweet spot. he doesn't have to justify why he picks something but too many of us i fear blindly accept that if a photo receives an ec it must be technically outstanding.

that, is the biggest downfall of the EC and sometimes i wish pete would go a little deeper towards explaining why something is chosen if it is chosen on the basis of technical merit vs an emotional response. i don't need to know what his emotional trigger buttons are, but i'm sure interested in the deeper technical aspects of photography that he (and the others here) see that i don't.

he may see a lighting technique that is the mark of a professional, or perfect exposure in a most difficult situation... whatever. i don't want to turn this into a bash lauren's photo conversation at all, that's not what this is about. perhaps this is a subject better taken up in a forum thread as it really has nothing to do with this image but a much larger issue. (?)

great composition. lovely textures and patterns all over. very well put together. so much to look at, and the movement of the smoke is a pleasure. background really works. kind of mysterious.

" but too many of us i fear blindly accept that if a photo receives an ec it must be technically outstanding."

You're starting to sound like Caraboose! Wink But I agree with you. Wink Criticism of an EC generally seems to be frowned upon.

Ok ok, lots of you don't like it - but this isn't helping as there is no specific constructive criticism that will help me so can you please all move this to a forum? Your point has been made.

Personally I like it. A photo can and should be about provoking a response or being inspirational as well as being technically good. I'm no expert, but I think this covers both for me. Nat :o)

Brill. Real sense of heat and smell in this.
6 Sep 2004 6:20AM
The last comment sums it up... it's not technically a great photograph, it's soft, you can't see everything, the background is out of focus but... BUT... there's a real sense of heat and smell in it. Deviant has got it in one. Since when does photography have to be technically perfect. It's about capturing and communicating a moment and presenting it to your (highly critical!) eyes. That moment can be technical, aspirational, emotional... it doesn't matter how you get there, it's the end result that counts. Apart from everything else this shot was taken as an exercise in movement. For all those reasons this shot gets my vote...and Lauren, I'm glad you found it in your chest of memories... that makes it even better.
6 Sep 2004 9:41AM
I think this picture is superb because it captures the whole essence of that moment. You can almost hear the sizzle of the burning hoof and smell that smoke. I agree that the picture is not technically perfect but how many good pictures are! It gets my click and I think that it is worthy of the EC.

I think people too readily criticise the choice of EC's but it should be remembered that these pictures are chosen by the Editor primarily because he likes them, not nessessarily for technical or creative merit. We all have different likes and dislikes, the world would be very tedious if it were otherwise!
