Horsefly

By SteveMackay
Composite of a deceased Horseflies head from two angles (it is probably a 'Cleg fly'?, please let me know), hundreds of shots focus stacked in Helicon Focus, the background is a black tube, macro lens + reversed 50mm lens, electronic release, work bench, focus rail, artificial lighting, soldering clamp, plamps, bits of tin foil and white paper as reflectors and diffusors, masking tape etc etc ....and a bottle of beer to calm the nervesTongue thanks for looking, cheersSmile

They look like Cleg flies to me! Nasty critters, but your photo has brought out the beauty in their eyes!

Top notch work - and I appreciate how fiddly this kind of thing is! It's really clean and crisp and the eyes are amazing.
The light is really nice, as is the black background. (I've really struggled to keep my blacks black after running through Zerene).
Steve.
