Extinct in the Wild

By SteveMoulding
Barbary/Atlas Lion - Panthera leo leo
The Atlas Lion's were found throughout most of Africa, lions are becoming increasingly rare outside protected areas and are endangered. The Atlas lions kept at Port Lympne are now extinct in the wild.
As a carnivore, lions eat a wide range of prey including wildebeest, zebras, buffalo, giraffes, gazelles and hares. They sometimes even kill young elephants! Most hunting is done by teams of lionesses, with the males joining in the eating, but not the killing. Lions are also scavengers and often steal kills from other predator cats such as cheetahs, and hyaenas as well as other lions. Hopefully with our help and breeding programmes around the world these Lions may once again roam free on African soil.
Have a great week. I will away for a few days and unable to keep up with you all but will endeavor the following week.
Many thanks for all the C&Cs.
Best wishes
Steve.

Super portrait, done well to get this at Port Lympne as the enclosure is quite dark at times. Ron.
